POSITION AVAILABLE:

 

MiraCosta College invites applications for one full-time, tenure-track faculty position, beginning in August 2018, based in the Noncredit ESL Department. The department is seeking an experienced community college or adult school ESL instructor who will teach multicultural students in any of the several levels of ESL instruction and multilevel classes provided at any of the multiple sites throughout the district. The candidate selected for this position will share leadership roles with other full-time instructors in coordinating and developing curriculum. The successful candidate will also work closely with the coordinators for the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) grant and the Adult Education Block Grant (AEBG).

 

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

 

The MiraCosta noncredit ESL program offers students a variety of learning opportunities to achieve proficiency in the English language and formulate and attain personal, academic, vocational, and/or civic goals. The department offers seven levels of English language instruction, as well as Career-Track ESL, conversation classes, reading and writing skills-based classes, computer and digital literacy classes, open-entry distance learning, citizenship, computer-based study, and weekend classes. Classes are offered at the MiraCosta College Community Learning Center (CLC) in Oceanside, as well as at more than 10 sites throughout the district. The department receives a federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) grant, assesses students on a fixed schedule as a requirement of the grant, and annually reports benchmarks. The department currently consists of four full-time faculty members committed to providing students with an exceptional learning experience. BACKGROUND:

 

MiraCosta students are diverse in age and represent all of California's major racial/ethnic groups. The credit student population in 2017 is approximately 44% White, 37% Latinx, 8% Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% Black/African American, 1% American Indian/Alaska Native, and 7% multiracial. Diversity is also evidenced by student-veterans, re-entry students, students with disabilities, international students, and LGBTQIA+. The college was designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) in 2013 and is also a military-friendly organization. This designation reflects the great responsibility that MiraCosta has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a campus that exhibits its dedication to its students and faculty through offering robust, culturally responsive events, including speaker series dedicated to heritage month events through the Social Justice and Equity Center.

 

Students in noncredit programs at MiraCosta are diverse in terms of first language, age, previous education, race, ethnicity, culture, socio-economics, and length of time in the United States. During the 2016-17 school year, the Noncredit ESL Department, which serves adult immigrants, had an enrollment of 3,267 students, 66% of whom were female, and 70% Hispanic/Latinx.

Representative Duties:

 

(E = essential job function)

 

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

1. Provide instruction in the noncredit ESL program in any course offered by the department. (E)

 

2. Work in collaboration with other full-time and associate (part-time) faculty in coordinating and maintaining currency of curriculum. (E)

 

3. Assist in the creation, review, development and evaluation of courses both online and on-ground, certificates, and programs in collaboration with other instructors as appropriate. (E)

 

4. Collaborate with other full-time noncredit ESL faculty to organize and lead staff development and mentor and evaluate associate faculty. (E)

 

5. Participate in departmental and faculty functions such as service on hiring committees, faculty performance evaluations, collaboration with staff, and participation in department meetings. (E)

 

6. Work collaboratively with noncredit and credit colleagues from other disciplines in the department's efforts to transition noncredit ESL students into the workforce or postsecondary education. (E)

 

7. Work collaboratively with faculty, counselors, and administration to facilitate the implementation of instructional and student support services as required by statewide and national initiatives such as Adult Education Block Grant (AEBG), Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Title II, and Student Success and Support Programs (SSSP). (E)

 

8. Participate in the development, assessment and evaluation of student learning outcomes (SLOs). (E)

 

9. Participate in the tenure review process as described in the "Criteria for Evaluation" at http://www.miracosta.edu/administrative/hr/downloads/CriteriaForEvaluation.pdf.

 

10. Assist in recruiting students and promoting the noncredit ESL program through participation in MiraCosta College and Continuing Education-sponsored events and educational outreach.

 

11. Participate in college-wide committee work and collegial governance.

 

12. Maintain currency in the discipline and in applicable technologies.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

To be eligible for this position, you must meet and provide evidence of the following minimum qualifications:

 

1. a bachelor's degree in teaching English as a second language (TESL), or teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL); OR

 

2. a bachelor's degree in education, English, linguistics, applied linguistics, any foreign language, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, or speech; AND a TESL certificate, which may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor; OR

 

3. a bachelor's degree in any of the majors specified in #2 above; AND one year of experience teaching ESL in an accredited institution; AND a TESL certificate, which may be completed concurrently during the first two years of employment as a noncredit instructor; OR

 

4. a full-time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in ESL; OR

 

5. a master's degree in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis; OR

 

6. a bachelor's degree in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate; AND a master's degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language; OR

 

7. a master of education degree in TESOL, Literacy and Culture (University of San Diego) or a master's degree in Linguistics with a Specialization in TESOL/Applied Linguistics (San Diego State University) -- approved comparable degree majors at MiraCosta College; OR

 

8. a fully satisfied, lifetime California Community College credential authorizing instruction in the appropriate subject matter; OR

 

9. the equivalent. Applicants who do not possess the EXACT degree major(s) and/or certificates listed above must attach an equivalency narrative and supporting documentation at the time of application. Desirable Qualifications:

 

1. Strong academic preparation in area of instruction, including a master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), or Education with a TESOL focus.

 

2. Knowledge of and successful recent experience in creating ESL curriculum and materials and delivering ESL instruction for adults.

 

3. Experience teaching all levels of ESL, including multilevel classes, via a variety of delivery methods and models identified as best practices both statewide and nationally, to include blended, hybrid, and online teaching.

 

4. Experience with WIOA-related assessments such as CASAS testing and experience in developing curriculum and materials for EL Civics assessments.

 

5. Knowledge of and recent successful experience in applying new and emerging technologies to facilitate and advance student language learning.

 

6. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, other on-campus groups, off-campus community groups, local employers, workforce agencies, and educational partners.

 

7. Ability to engage, inspire, and motivate students representing a wide variety of ages; academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds; demographic groups; and educational abilities.

 

8. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both in oral and written discourse.

 

9. Commitment to examine, reflect, and modify instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support disproportionately impacted student populations with a goal of closing equity gaps (see Student Equity website at http://www.miracosta.edu/studentservices/studentequity/index.html).

 

10. Ability to contribute to the mission of the college.

 

Licenses and Other Requirements:

 

Working Hours: WORKLOAD AND OTHER EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION:

This position is a 10-month, 176 day contract. The standard contractual work week for this position is forty (40) hours consisting of thirty (30) hours of instructional time, curriculum development, preparation and student evaluation (contact hours and preparation hours). The remaining time will consist of five (5) student hours (of which at least two (2) hours must be designated office hours), and five (5) institutional service hours. Noncredit faculty may substitute three (3) of the required five (5) weekly student hours for additional preparation hours. The person selected for this position will be assigned a Faculty Service Area (FSA) in Noncredit ESL and will be subject to assignment to any district facility during any hours of operation. Adherence to all District policies and procedures is expected.

If your degree/coursework is from a college or university anywhere outside of the United States, you must submit a detailed evaluation from a professional evaluation agency. Transcripts or translations in English still require the evaluation to show the U.S. equivalence of your degree.

b. If needed to meet the minimum qualifications, a copy of your full-time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in ESL.

 

c. If needed to meet the minimum qualifications, a copy (front and back) of your fully satisfied, lifetime California Community College credential authorizing instruction in the appropriate subject matter.
