Summary

Under general supervision in the Department of Internal Medicine, the Medical Assistant II performs expanded and advanced level medical assistant duties including but not limited to identifying and resolving concerns regarding patient satisfaction, patient flow, and compliance with procedures and guidelines. Typically provides direct clinical support to one or more clinicians. Demonstrating a high level of competence provides back-up coverage for support staff; answering phones, scheduling appointments including appropriate follow-up appointments, placing lab orders, and conducting outreach calls and sending letters on behalf of the clinician, as well as processing prescription refill requests. Works to improve clinical efficiencies of the operation by determining urgency and priority of walk-ins, add-on patients and patient consults. Provides direct clinical and clerical support to clinicians. In some cases may support more than one department.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: High School graduate (or equivalent education, training or experience) required. Associate's degree in medical assisting or graduate of medical assistant certification program preferred.

Skills and Experience: Skills and experience acquired through at least three years in a clinical setting as a Medical Assistant. Able to communicate in a professional and appropriate manner, both verbally and in writing. Strong interpersonal, customer service, time management, and organizational skills required. Ability to work independently and at times requires to make sound decisions without direct supervision. Computer experience required with the ability to use word processing and spreadsheet programs. Electronic medical record (EMR) experience and/or aptitude to master the EMR based on other technology experience required. Must have up to date certification to give vaccines.

Working Conditions: Busy office environment. Frequently moves among the exam rooms. Moves and transports supplies and equipment and escorts patients. Must be able to lift 30 pounds and possess physical stamina to assist patients.
